The Rev. William Dunbar Evans III, born May 29, 1945, graduated from Chesterfield High School and Sewanee University. He married Mary Inge Hampson of Pittsburgh, PA on May 10, 1969. A Vietnam Army veteran, he returned to attend the Virginia Theological Seminary and earn a Masters of Divinity to become an Episcopal priest.
He was called to parishes in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Alabama. He served short terms as a chaplain in the Reserves, the police department, emergency rescue squad, Hospice of Montgomery, and Maxwell Prison Base, along with missionary outreach to those in Gambia, Africa. He was active in Cursillo, Paseo, and Kairos Prison Ministry.
He and his wife started Abba’s Orchard, a 501c3 non-profit intended to build a hands on, Biblical playland to spread the “Great Commission” locally and glorify the Lord.
He died early Tuesday morning, January 24, 2012, at home with his family, friends, and church surrounding and supporting him while Southeast Hospice Network provided care.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, their children, William Dunbar Evans IV, Edward Arthur Evans and wife Sheryl, Jonathan Lee Kidd Evans and wife Heather, Mary Rebecca Seung Evans Sorensen, their granddaughter Olivia Evans Hood and husband Ryan, and their great-grandchildren Gabriel and Skylar Hood.
The memorial service is at Christ Church XP, 8800 Vaughn Road, Montgomery, AL 36117 on February 18 at 11 am. Donations can be made to Christ Church XP (Altar Guild for Evans Memorial) or to Abba’s Orchard, 3437 Fernway Drive, Montgomery, AL 36111.
